Select Quotes from Cover Stars

Hayley Kiyoko, singer, actress, dancer, on embracing the ‘L’ in LGBTQ: “I think it’s been really hard to break those stereotypes and stigmas that society has just placed on so many people that have been unwarranted and unwelcome,” she says. “So we’re getting rid of those, hopefully, as more people learn to love themselves and exist and change the way others see one another.”

Jerrod Carmichael, stand-up comedian, writer, filmmaker, and actor, on his coming-out moment during his Emmy-winning Rothaniel special: “Something you find a moment where you can face it,” he says. “That’s the hard thing, just consistently facing things. You just kind of leap. It’s kind of like a roller coaster or skydiving, where it’s going to be scary and big but you’re accepting it’s not going to kill you. It’s how I kind of learned how to swim, knowing the water is not trying to kill me.”

Michael “Mick” Richardson, of the Old Gays star group on TikTok, on providing joy to followers in anti-LGBTQ+ countries: “So, they’re living in an environment of extreme suppression that we can’t comprehend. But so many times, we get comments from people saying, ‘I came home. It was just a shitty day. It was frightening. And then I watched your videos and I forget my problems for just those few seconds.’ And if we can do that every time we make a TikTok, for one person, that’s why I’m here.”

Rafael Silva, 9-1-1: Lone Star actor, on the chemistry in bringing his character to life with co-star Ronen Rubinstein: “Two of the same pieces of the same puzzle are not going to go together, they’re just not. They have to be different in order to complement each other, and I think we do that very well as actors and as people.”
